Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

Participants were 46 CLKs at the upper intermediate level who answered MQs, DCTs and RIs. They were also asked to provide reflections on their assessments and their refusals to participate in RIs. The coding results are then compared with the original RI transcripts to determine whether they captured the underlying pragmatic behavior.

The participants comprised 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were asked to complete the DCTs in their first language and to complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2. Then, they were invited to attend a RI where they were asked to reflect on their responses to the DCT situations.
The results showed that CLKs, on average, did not adhere to the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even when they were able to create patterns that were similar to natives. They were also aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their actions to learner-internal factors like their identities, personalities and identities that are multilingual, as well as ongoing life histories. They also spoke of external factors like relational affordances. They described, for example how their relations with their professors enabled them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and cultural standards of their university.

Future researchers should consider reassessing the applicability of these tests in different contexts and in particular situations. This will help them better understand the effects of different cultural contexts on the classroom behavior and interactions of students in L2. This will also assist educators to improve their methods of teaching and testing Korean pragmatics.
