Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade equipment due to their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a kind of upgrade that can be applied to armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item that they're connected to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at any bonfire. They can also be salvaged using an expert or higher salvage kits to recover upgrade components from other items.

The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it will absorb. A piece of armor upgraded to the highest upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. It is important to note that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it must be heavier.

There are many different kinds of armor upgrade available in the game. Each has a different impact. Some upgrades give armor an additional number of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The kind of armor upgrade an item level upgrade can receive is indicated by the name of the upgrade as illustrated in the table below.

A few upgrades also feature magic or a mix of technology and magic, which is indicated by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Certain upgrades also require fees to use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades are updated daily or never expire, dependent on the upgrade.

The cheapest method to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be gathered through exploring the surroundings and looting minor loot chests. The player should be aware that upgrading a piece to its maximum upgrade level can boost its defense. However, it can also affect its agility and speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The boost in defense usually isn't worth the weight and power expenses of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to improve the effectiveness of specific aspects of a weapon. Upgrades can increase the accuracy of a rifle, or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Upgrading a Weapon, Equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade price of a certain number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the more bars are required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials The cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the method of upgrading your weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. Prior to Chapter 2: Season 5, you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a specific number of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level and at that point, the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this, however, the process is high on RNG and low on agency. All tiers of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler however, there are some exceptions to this, such as the rare and legendary jewels which require you to be at a sufficient level to qualify for them. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with another identical jewel without destroying it. You can only replace the jewel only once in a piece of equipment.

Utilizing more jewels in a move will make it feel smoother and is typically performed to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Apart from improving performance, the jewels create an area that is stronger than steel, so the repeated friction from pivots won't damage them as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to be available as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded at the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs can also be removed, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components, such as traits and aegis are not swappable, and can only be recovered using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are a great way to give your character a variety of small, but beneficial, benefits. They can be obtained in the beginning areas as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and by performing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player will unlock is the cloak. It provides a tiny but valuable boost in speed of movement and the ability to evade. After that, they'll be able to acquire rings, amulets, and necklaces in a similar manner to the way a player can acquire armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment comes with an upgrade slot that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades are smaller and are able to be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active when the hero isn't fighting. This lets a hero be more efficient when they are not active. It also helps compensate for the lack of a excellent team or talent tree slots that are normally filled by the hero's optimal stats.
