How to replace audi key fob an audi a3 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference key for audi comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). Alternatively, GM's version of this part would be an option.
