World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the upgrade type it can increase an item's Mark Level or Rarity and boost additional stats.
The process of upgrading gear in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests Each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the price of the next item by a specified amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. This is the sum of all of its upgraded perks (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrading items can be expensive, depending on the upgrader you choose and the type of upgrade item you choose to do. This is due to the fact that many perks have to be replaced in order for the item to get upgraded.
Item level is a commonly used measure of power, and can be found on all tooltips of items. It also serves to determine a gating condition when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear that a player can wear (since PvP is restricted to a lower level). The average level of the item can be found on the character sheet.
When deciding whether to buy or sell gear, players can compare the level of an item upgrading. It's an indicator of the damage and its quality. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when examining a vendor's inventory.
On PC, you can view the item level using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing in /itemlevel chat.
There are a few theories on how the calculation of the item's level is carried out. One theory is that the level is a number that comes from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration that different advantages are valued differently and that gems in the sockets boost the value of the item. This can result in a calculated item's ilvl that is often very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.
However, this isn't the only factor that affects an item upgrader mod's ilvl, because the size of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for instance by adding an amount to its crit rating or haste rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.
Item Stats
Item stats can make or break an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and prevent one weapon from being "the best." The stat mods on a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then increased by a player's skill.
Upgrades to an item may increase the stats of an item. The cost of upgrades is determined by the rarity of the item. An item that is white or grey for instance, will only be upgraded once, while an item that has rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.
Affixes are a different method to change an item's stats. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can provide the item additional damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving the dead or reducing the cooldowns) or make the item unique by adding an additional name to the item.
At present, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button with the arrows that circle. This will cost a certain amount of gold and other items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges, just like the other rerolling methods.
In addition to rerolling affixes, players can also choose which stats they want to keep on an item when it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges for an item are based on the level of the item, however every item is guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within the range, unless it's an item that is unique or an item that is a God roll from a raid boss.
This is another thing that could be altered by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes or deciding which stats to enhance. But, like base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item upgrade basis, and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player boosts the likelihood of locating items, the properties that are created by loot and the intensity of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to acquire better gear in earlier waves and is therefore more valuable in the initial game run than later ones since most players prefer higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.
In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith’s overall upgrade chances that increase with each level of the item. They can also be increased by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, armor, and shields can spawn or be crafted with the Luck property, which has an initial value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to increase the value of 40 luck or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.
Moreover there are certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available in the shop or constructed using the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Item upgrades are a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it does not work.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading that item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The percentage of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail can't exceed 100%.
The luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade. Each item has an average success rate of 25%, and every item that has Luck increases that chance by five percent.
The item upgrade overlays are rendered above items in the inventory. This may cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
