Origins

The early history of Toto that began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the early years of its existence, the company produced products to meet the demands of new, modern urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country that produced ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s, the company began to expand outwards to profit from sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and market other products of other manufacturers in order to complement its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also improved its system of distribution to better serve customers and increase profit. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the aftermath of drug-related charges. However, the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Despite the turbulence, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The group managed to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.
